Coffee Break for Fans & Friends - Friday 1p

You’re not a performer, a DJ, or an agent; you don’t organize a festival, run a venue, or practice entertainment law.  What you do is much more important:  You show up at concerts and events, invite your friends, and buy CDs. In other words, you are our beloved AUDIENCE!

Gather at the hotel restaurant over coffee or drinks, and get better acquainted with your fellow music fans.  Share stories of that epic road trip to see your favorite performer.  Exchange ideas about what audience members can do to support the arts.  The performers and venues at FARM are very glad you’re here!

Hosted by Joanne Smidde-Brush
Where: in the Hotel Bar

Now See Hear

Folk Alliance Region Midwest (FARM) has an exciting new initiative for 2018 that brings visual art into our conference. Visual artists from the Lansing and Grand Rapids area are participating in ‘Now See Hear’, a program modeled after Folk Alliance Region Far-West’s program, led by Phil Ward.

Each artist was randomly assigned a song by one of FARM’s 2018 Official Showcase musicians. These songs are inspiring the creation of visual art, which will be displayed at the FARM conference along with a link to listen to the song while enjoying the art.

Each piece of art, along with the song link, will be displayed on this page as they are completed.

Musicians attending the FARM conference are encouraged to write a song inspired by one of these pieces of art, and share that song with FARM, creating an ongoing circle of art and music.

Common Chords - Thursday 3p

This is a non-profit educational program started by our Keynote Speaker, Rev. Robert Jones and his musical partner Matt Watroba.  Looking to showcase the things we all have in common – music and art, writing and storytelling. Watch this wonderful short film that demonstrates this inspiring program.

Wisdom of the "Daves" - Friday 2:30pm

Wisdom of the “Daves” is a play on Wisdom of the Elders. These 4 gents have won some hard-earned wisdom they are graciously sharing.

Dave Tamulevich – Booking agent who helped launch the careers of Ani DiFranco, Dar Williams and currently manages & books a slew of superstars such as John Gorka & Peter Yarrow) http://tamulevich.com

Dave Siglin – the force behind one of the nations premiere acoustic music venues, The Ark and our Lifetime Achievement Award recipient! http://arklegacyproject.org

Dave Barrett – Grammy winning songwriter/composer best known for penning “One Shining Moment” (look it up). In addition to being a brilliant songwriter and composer he knows the song licensing side of things… http://davidbarrett.com

Dave Humphreys – one of the founding members and former President of the Folk Alliance International and lifetime member of FARM, built the venerable Two Way Street Coffee House in Downers Grove, IL. http://twowaystreet.org

Moderated by Matt Watroba, all these guys have been around the block a few times and will have great stories and of course, wisdom to share.

Mother Jones in Heaven - Saturday 12p

We’re super excited this year to be hosting a special presentation of Si Kahn’s acclaimed musical ! The play opens as Mother Jones arrives to discover Heaven is identical to her favorite Irish Pub. The legendary labor-organizer comes to life through story and song using moments of profound insight woven with hilarious tales of a hellion in her prime. Vivian Nesbitt and John Dillon perform.

Known for their work on the nationally syndicated public radio program Art of the Song heard on 120 stations across the country, John and Vivian bring their combined gifts to the stage. John’s musical skills are highlighted on guitar and harmony vocals.

“The songs are poignant, accurate and thought-provoking… John Dillon, music director, plays beautifully with his guitar to Nesbitt’s singing… Vivian Nesbitt was so wonderful as Mother Jones, you would forget this is a play and think you were listening to Mother Jones herself speak… The play leaves the audience with that radical notion that they can change the future.”  Mark Maxey – People’s World
